It's Time to Reflect on Instructional Design: Digital Media, New Tools and Technology

Note: this post was created as the Signature Assessment for the course LDT300x Instructional Design: Digital Media, New Tools, and Technology. You can learn more about this course (and the Micro-Master's program it is a part of) here.

Instructional Goal

I started this course with the intention of creating a cohesive set of assignments related to the implementation of Open Educational Resources (OERs) into the curriculum. I frequently implement OERs into my own college curriculum and wanted to encourage others to do so as well. However, as the course progressed, I also found myself returning to instructional design models and considering their importance. As such, I ended the course by creating a training module on Understanding by Design. The materials created in this course can be used for myriad purposes, but I created them to advertise OERs to faculty and staff and train faculty on OERs and backward design.

Digital Content:

To achieve the instructional goals, I created the following:

  • A rubric to evaluate OERs for instructional use

  • Two infographics: OERs and the Research Process

  • Enhanced digital images: A promotional flyer (or slide)

  • Instructional video: Introduction to Open Educational Resources (+ storyboard & blog post)

  • Screen capture video: Building OERs into Your Course (+ closed captioning + storyboard & blog post)

  • Educational podcast

  • Interactive learning module: Understanding by Design

Rubric:

I created a rubric to aid faculty in evaluating Open Educational Resources for classroom use.

Infographics:

I created two infographics: one to help faculty understand OERs and another to help students recall the basic steps of the research process.

Enhanced Digital Images:

I created an informational flyer, which could also be used as the first slide in a presentation, to advertise a career panel for students. I resized images, added filters, and fine-tuned the focus to create a cohesive presentation.

Instructional Video:

I used my knowledge of OERs to record a video introducing learners to the concept of Open Educational Resources.

I also utilized skills gained in this course to develop a storyboard for the video.

Screen Capture Video:

Unlike creating instructional videos, I had never used the screen capture feature before. For this video, I used screen capture (Screencastify) to demonstrate how to link OERs into a learning management system (LMS). I also scripted the video and uploaded captions to make the video ADA compliant.

Educational Podcast:

When asked to create a podcast, I was not sure what I wanted to discuss. Then, an article from Inside Higher Ed came across my timeline on a recent survey suggesting that students are disappointed in the quality of education they have received during the pandemic. My podcast discusses this article, why students might be displeased, and strategies to address these issues at the individual, institutional, and societal levels.

Interactive Learning Module:

Given that the majority of my other assets were related to OERs, I initially considered creating an OER module. However, I decided to create an adaptive learning module on Understanding by Design/Backward Design. By far, this was my favorite assessment, as I had never used Rise 360 before. I plan to use elements of this course for an upcoming conference presentation on backward design for learning.

Reflection:

Ultimately, this course helped me to try new technologies (like screen capture and Rise 360- which I wish I had full access to!) The ultimate goal for this project was to create content that can be used in the capstone project in the MicroMaster's program (a multi-week, interactive online learning course). Given that I have created multiple assets on instructional design models and Open Educational Resources, I will need to seriously consider which to focus on for my capstone project, or, how to integrate both into a cohesive course.
