Introduction to Sociology

Introduces students to the major concepts and theoretical approaches in the discipline of sociology. Emphasizes social institutions, stratification, community, power, and social change. Provides a foundation for understanding social scientific theory and methods. I have taught this course in face-to-face, hybrid, and online formats. 

Social Problems

A survey course examining social problems in the United States with an emphasis on social inequality, social change, and viewpoint diversity. Develops awareness and understanding of why and how problems arise, and the means for dealing with them. 

Sociology of the Family

A survey course examining family as a dynamic social institution. Considers research on families of many different types and stages. Includes political, ideological, demographic, and economic determinants of family formation. I have taught this course in f2f and online formats.

Race and Ethnic Relations

A lower-division undergraduate course examining race, ethnicity, and immigration in the United States from a sociological perspective. Topics include historical and contemporary experiences, prejudice, discrimination, and public policy. I have taught this course in face-to-face, hybrid, and online formats. 

Drugs and Society

A survey course covering drug use, abuse, and regulation as a social and public health- rather than medical or psychopathological- phenomenon. I have taught this course in face-to-face, hybrid, and online formats. 

Crime and Society

An introduction to criminological theories, the criminal justice system, and crime-related public policy.

Sociology of Deviance

A survey course examining multiple forms of criminal and non-criminal deviance in society, focusing on the definitions, emergence, institutionalization, and disappearance of deviant acts over time. I have taught this class in f2f and online formats. 

Sex, Gender, and Society

A lower-division undergraduate course examining the social determinants and consequences of gender and sexuality at the individual and societal levels. Emphasizes the historical and contemporary context of gender roles, gender identities, sexual identities, cultural attitudes about gender and sexuality, and major theories of gender inequality.

Multicultural Diversity

A survey course focusing on a sociological analysis of diversity and cultural competence in the United States. It provides a foundation designed to increase student’s awareness, knowledge, and critical thinking skills in relation to diversity in social institutions and interactions.
